India elected as a Member of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council

  • India has been elected as a Member of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council for another 4-year term (2019-2022).
  • The elections to the Council were held during the ongoing ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2018 at Dubai, UAE.
  • By securing 165 votes, India ranked third among the, and eighth among the
  • Totally 48 countries elected to the Council among them13 countries elected to the Council from the Asia-Australasia region.
  • India has been an active member of the ITU since 1869, earnestly supporting the development and propagation of telecom in the global community of nations.
  • India has been a regular member of the ITU Council since 1952, and has played an important role in harmonizing the contributions of member States from the region, always respecting the principles of equality and consensus-building.
  • India strong partnership with the ITU is also demonstrated in the recent ITU decision to set up the ITU South Asia Area Office and Technology Innovation Centre in New Delhi.

International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council

  • ITU is the United Nations specialized agency, originally known as International Telegraph Union responsible for issues that concern information and communication technologies.
  • ITU headquater situated in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • ITU is a member of the United Nations Development Group.
  • Globally The ITU has 193memberstates who elect representatives to the Council.
  • ITU has been an intergovernmental public–private partnership organization since its inception. Its membership includes 193 Member States and around 800 public and private sector companies, and academic institutions as well as international and regional telecommunication entities, known as Sector Members and Associates, which undertake most of the work of each Sector
  • It allocate global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, develop the technical standards that ensure networks and technologies seamlessly interconnect, and strive to improve access to ICTs to underserved communities worldwide.

International Film Festival of India (IFFI)

  • 49th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2018 will be held in Goa from 20th to 28th November, 2018.
  • It  will showcase 212 films from over 68 countries which reflects diversity of taste. International Competition section has 15 films out of which 3 are Indian. Competition section itself represents films produced and co-produced by 22 countries.
  • This year Israel to be the Country Focus and Jharkhand to be the State Focus
  • Dan Wolman to be given the Lifetime Achievement Award
